Hataitai Property by John Mills Architects:

“This is a true Wellington property. Spectacular views, but facing the morning sun, with a slope to challenge any engineer. Situated on the eastern flank of Mt Victoria, close to the city, with magnificent views over Evans Bay, Shelly Bay, and the Tararua mountain ranges to the north.

The wish was to subtly unfold the interiors, as one climbs up, and ultimately provide the massive outlook and outside movement to the residing rooms. The owners wished a complex series of private spaces, contrasting with clean yet expressive type and honest finishes.

A sturdy wish to have a cozy home has been realised, with the ambient temperature stable at twenty -21 degrees (60 – 70 °F) 12 months round with tiny thermal input due to insulation and passive solar design.

Provided the cacophony of constructing styles in the surrounding location, we attempted to merge with the hillside, and let the vertical geometry give the Architectural melody. The outcome is a dynamic indigenous house that embraces family members residing whilst generating unique Wellington spaces with playful and useful materials and enduring living comfort.”
