Te Hana Farmhouse by S3 Architects:

“The customers brief was for a family holiday home located inside of their huge farm house. The favored internet site was on a ridge line with expansive rural views. The web site is exposed to strong winds and has predominantly southern views.

The goal was to reply to the views whilst offering a sense of shelter from the aspects. And a straightforward bold kind was regarded as an appropriate response to the vast rural landscape.

The spaces are organized all around a central courtyard which gives an outside living space oriented for afternoon sun. Even though the courtyard provides bodily protection, visual connections to landscapes past have been developed in all instructions.

Substitute outdoor living spaces had been positioned on the south and east sides of the house to let for use at various times of the day and to suit the wind path. From the within the feeling of shelter is enhanced by deeply recessing the glazing line of all large openings into the developing form producing large overhangs.

The internet site slopes away steeply on the 2 sides of the ridge leaving a narrow strip to develop on. Geotechnical constraints prevented any creating load being placed near the top of the northern slope even more restricting the creating platform. The spatial programme was accomplished within a small footprint by cantilevering some spaces out over the unstable ground.

The short needed the main residing area to have a good volume. The internet site has a gentle slope in the path of entry so we set a continuous ceiling degree and stepped the floors down through 4 amounts. Beginning with the entry area, becoming compressed, you circulate down around the periphery of the courtyard by means of a hierarchy of volumes that relates to the space function and strategy size, ending with entry into the major residing space.

The site was very tough but with the clients ongoing commitment we really feel that we have accomplished their goals completely with a basic and classy built kind.”
