Gelb Residence by Bruce Norelius Studio:

“Commissioned in 1949 and owned by the original family for 60 years, the Gelb Residence was one particular of the least modified in A. Quincy Jones’ Mutual Housing Association, an ambitious experiment in Los Angeles submit-war housing. Every architectural element and detail was developed and executed with extraordinary economic climate and elegance. The post-and-beam frame is laterally reinforced with judiciously placed redwood-cladshear walls and exposed concrete block aspects. Exterior window and door jambs are integrated into the construction, with no a redundant move anyplace. Principal components consist of concrete, concrete block, redwood cladding, and douglas fir posts, beams and plywood.

Our rehabilitation philosophy has been 1 of a light hand. We started by sketching and knowing each and every joint just before any design perform commenced. Early on, it was determined that nothing at all of the post-and-beam frame or of the shell would be altered. Rather, we coaxed the property back to vigor by updating systems, rehabilitating finishes the place possible or changing them with comparable supplies when required. Bathrooms and kitchen have been replaced in entirety, making use of components and materials sympathetic to the original straightforward palette, though no walls, doors or windows had been moved.

Our first aim was to respect the original residence and to maintain its spirit. However, when we have produced interventions, our purpose was to express them—quietly—as independent from the 1949 fabric. Kitchen cabinetry is oiled steel and seems virtually black lighting fixtures hang on cables and offer indirect light. The landscape technique moved away from the unique semi-tropical notion, most likely typical of its time, to a no-water, largely native and dry-climate landscape. Each design determination has been produced deliberately and with the comprehending it could be reversed in the potential when, no doubt, a different mindset towards preservation and rehabilitation will predominate.”
