Aviator’s Villa by Urban Workplace Architecture:

“This task explores the idea of flight as a strong motivator for architectural darings.

The residence, developed for a retired Pilot, the Aviator, is organized as an analogical continuum of disassembled flight components. Similarly to how the ‘Air Body’ wraps an airplane all close to, and fully, so is the Residence ‘exposed’ to air on all its sides, in an orbital vogue.

The Residence, sited on a hilly parcel next to a tiny lake in the New York location of Duchess County, plays on the idea of becoming fully surrounded by water as nicely, as the swimming pool to the south side of the residence mirrors the water body of the lake on the north side. The Architecture is therefore imagined as a floating piece in between 2 water bodies and entirely surrounded by air.

Similarly to how a plane would steer and stage by means of currents, simultaneously aimed at its destination and navigating the prevalent currents, the Property turns and torques to encounter each the sky, the surrounding views and the waters. The Property seems south, north and west predominantly. Articulated as a vertically extending volume and a cantilevered prow, the major house is oriented to allow maximum daylight in. Big open glazed panes are mounted on riveted metal frames, more screened by perforated metal panelling or brise-soleils. These components are meant to replicate the texture of clouds of one plane fending through the skies, even though mitigating the high sun rays and creating soothing shadows inside the home interiors.

The home is therefore designed as a minimum sequence of 3 primary spaces: the huge thirty feet tall residing/study and kitchen/dining spot, the cantilevered 40 feet bedroom, and the Library. This last floating volume is imagined a ‘Memory Box’. Available only by way of and right from the Bedroom, the Library is believed both of as a container of memorabilia of the Owner’s previous, as nicely as a area for reflection and examine. Its big window opening faces the wooded places outside, although a much more secluded location in the rear is lit by a zenithal skylight whose view is directed to the cantilevered volume of the bedroom over.

The home for an airplane pilot (the aviator) is the 2 expressive and easy in its architectural morphology. A series of hidden spaces are tucked between the 2 main spaces and are uncovered by way of the monumental circulatory staircase ascending to the bedroom at the best. The path by means of the residence rooms is articulated via a sequence of programmatic functions: living, bath, sleeping and learning. This sequence is imagined vertically and one- directionally, inviting the Proprietor to stick to a disciplined and timed journey by way of the house. In some way the arrival at the upper level bedroom and sitting space is viewed as a everyday final retreat, a prolonged lasting time which will not demand the descent back into the reduce floor kitchen and living space. Spaces are meant to be lived independently and uniquely, as a counterpart to regular living where all spaces are directly adjacent.”
